Our August Speaker Series, Seed Saving and Seed Library Resources, will cover Seed Library resources and experiences, the importance of saving seed, and practical tools for collecting seed and interacting with a Seed Bank or Library in your area!
Seed saving supports ethical development and stewardship of regionally adapted seed, plant life, and agriculture. Seed saving preserves crop biodiversity and increases farmers and gardeners investment in regional seed systems. This presentation will cover several volunteers' experience with saving seed, engaging grower-volunteers, and implementing seed libraries around the state of Wyoming.
Presenters include Micah Most, Lane Bushmeyer, Amber McDaniels, and Claire Deuter.
Micah Most is the agriculture and natural resources educator with University of Wyoming Extension in Johnson County. A lifelong gardener and green thumb, he launched the Johnson County Seed Library in collaboration with the Johnson Co. Public Library, Johnson Co. 4-H, and the Johnson Co. Master Gardeners in 2024.
Lane Bushmeyer has worked at the Fremont County Library System’s Lander Library for four years. Beginning in 2023, he took over the library’s side of a seed library project that had gone dormant during the pandemic. The seed library has been assisted by a number of organizations and independent volunteers over the years. Currently, Pushroot Community Garden is the main organization that helps acquire, sort, and stock the seeds. In 2024, the collection received its official name, the Elaine Campbell Memorial Seed Library, in honor of one of our earliest and most dedicated volunteers. Lane provides support and coordination on the library side, much of the seed saving is done by volunteers and generous members of our community who provide seeds.
Amber is the President of Pushroot Community Garden in Lander, Wyoming, and has been involved with the garden for six years. She's passionate about strengthening local food systems and improving food access in our community. She's especially interested in seed saving as a way to preserve local heirloom varieties, build community resilience, and expand her local community seed library.
Claire Deuter is the Northern Wyoming Community Organizer for Powder River Basin Resource Council. Based in Sheridan, she focuses on a variety of issues to empower individuals and protect Wyoming’s air, water, land, and communities. PRBRC works with the Sheridan County Library to provide a free seed library and learning resources to the Sheridan community.
Our speaker series will happen virtually, Thursday, August 27, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Zoom links will be distributed to attendees via registration and reminder emails before the event.
